According to the latest media reports, the Japanese two-wheeler maker Yamaha is in the process of developing a new 200cc motorbike called Yamaha R2. Yamaha currently does not offer any 200cc motorcycles in Nepal so we can assume that the R2 could be the name for the new 200cc motorbike. A few months back Yamaha also applied for the R2 trademark in global markets such as Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the Philippines. Once launched in Nepal, it is expected that the new Yamaha R2 will sit between the R15 and R3.
Yamaha has already started working on or already developed a 200cc motor which we don't know as of yet. Yamaha does not have any 200cc engine for now but R2 could come with stringent Euro 5 compliant or BS6 emission norms. It is expected that Yamaha could use the R3’s 321cc parallel-twin engine block to produce the new engine. R2 could also use the existing 155cc single-cylinder engine. However, these all are just guesses as the brand’s official confirmation is still awaited.
Yamaha offers various ranges of motorbikes derived from R such as R15, R3, R7, R6, and R1. Only R15 is available in the Nepalese market right now. The motorcycle will come with a new advanced design and numerous features, which will be inspired by the new Yamaha R7. R2 is also likely to be equipped with features like Variable Valves Actuation (VVA) and upside-down telescopic front forks. It is likely to pair with a 6-speed gearbox including slip and assist function.
Yamaha’s ‘R’ range has always been considered as sporty bikes. The brand has already stated that they are not going to launch any high-displacement bikes in the Nepalese market any time soon but in one of the recent interviews, the company also said that they are planning to launch new 200cc bikes in the Nepalese market. Hence, we can’t deny the possibilities of a 200cc Yamaha bike in Nepal. With already R15 on sale here, time will reveal all that will happen to R2. The new R2 could be positioned against the likes of the KTM RC200 and the Bajaj Pulsar RS200.
