Difference Between BS4 (BSIV) and BS6 (BSVI) Engine

BS4 (Bharat Stage 4) and BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) are emission standards set by the Indian government to regulate the levels of air pollutants emitted by vehicles. The main difference between the two standards is the level of emission of harmful gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that are allowed.


BS4 standards were implemented in April 2017 and applied to all new vehicles sold in Nepal. These standards were based on the Euro 4 emission standards, which were in effect in Europe at the time. BS4 standards required vehicles to meet certain emission limits for CO, HC, and NOx, but these limits were relatively lenient compared to the stricter BS6 standards that followed.


BS6 standards were implemented in April 2020 and apply to all new vehicles sold in Nepal. These standards are significantly stricter than the BS4 standards and are equivalent to the Euro 6 emission standards that are in effect in Europe. BS6 standards require vehicles to meet much lower emission limits for CO, HC, and NOx, which means that vehicles must be equipped with more advanced emission control technologies to meet these standards.


One of the main differences between BS4 and BS6 engines is the type of fuel they can use. BS4 engines are designed to run on regular petrol and diesel, while BS6 engines require the use of cleaner fuels such as ultra-low sulfur diesel and Bharat Stage VI-compliant petrol. The use of cleaner fuels in BS6 engines helps to reduce the emissions of harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).


Another difference between BS4 and BS6 engines is the level of emission control they provide. BS4 engines are designed to meet a certain level of emission control, but they are not as strict as BS6 engines. BS6 engines are designed to meet much stricter emission standards, which means they emit significantly lower levels of pollutants compared to BS4 engines.


One of the main benefits of BS6 engines is their impact on air quality. The reduced levels of pollutants emitted by these engines can help to improve air quality in cities and reduce the risk of respiratory problems and other health issues caused by polluted air.
