Bajaj Auto has announced its entry into the electric vehicle business with the Chetak electric scooter. In fact, the Chetak will be the first electric two-wheeler to be introduced by a mainstream two-wheeler manufacturer and will be the first product to be introduced under Bajaj Auto's new electric vehicle (EV) vertical, to be called Urbanite. The debutant electric scooter from the brand was revealed back in October 2019 under the Chetak nameplate.
Bajaj says that the battery life of the lithium-ion units on the Chetak is about 70,000 km, and was tested across different weather conditions, terrains, road surfaces and more. That's one of the longer warranty tenures in the industry for electric two-wheelers are concerned. There are longer periods on offer though with Revolt Intellicorp offering a warranty period of five years/75,000 km, along with free maintenance benefits up to three years/30,000 km and a battery warranty of up to eight years/1.5 lakh km. The more comparable Ather Energy offers a battery life up to 50,000 km and comes with a three year/unlimited km warranty.
Powering the Bajaj Chetak electric scooter is a 4kW electric motor that draws its power from the IP67-rated lithium-ion battery pack. The scooter can be further operated in two modes namely Eco and Sport. In Eco mode, the scooter will be able to offer a range of 100km on a single charge of battery while the sport mode will offer a range of 80km. The battery requires a total of 5 hours for a full charge while the scooter can be charged up to 25% in just an hour.
Featuring a neo-retro inspired design language, the Bajaj Chetak has been equipped with an all-LED setup. The LED headlight at the front has been mated to LED DRLs. In addition to this, the brand has also offered the e-scooter with an all-digital instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity. The rider can further manage the riding data via a dedicated mobile application. Once launched, the Bajaj Chetak will compete in the market with the likes of Ather 450 and the Ather 450X.
