Driving license services have been shut down indefinitely across Nepal
System damage from the earlier Gen Z movement still unresolved
New license, renewal and trial services affected nationwide
Department unable to guarantee system stability after partial restorations
Backlog expected to grow as 6,000 to 7,000 applicants remain stranded daily
After a brief period of hope, driving license services across Nepal have once again come to a complete halt. The Department of Transport Management has announced an indefinite closure after discovering that earlier attempts to restore the system were not sustainable. Offices that had resumed partial operations have now stopped all licensing services until further notice.
The Gen Z movement incidents caused severe destruction to essential equipment, including servers, printing machines and digital infrastructure. Despite recent repairs, the system continues to suffer instability, forcing the department to suspend operations again. Several transport offices are still functioning from temporary setups that cannot support full-scale licensing activities.
The shutdown affects every major service
New driving license applications
License renewals
Trial exams for new applicants
Many citizens who were expecting long-awaited trials and renewals now face another wave of delays. Offices are unable to process biometric data, print licenses or update records because core systems remain compromised.
Before services were halted, the department handled an average of 6,000 to 7,000 applications each day. With the renewed shutdown, this backlog is multiplying rapidly. Applicants who already waited two months for earlier repairs must now wait even longer for the next resumption announcement.
Applicants are advised to
Avoid visiting transport offices until the department announces a confirmed restart
Monitor official updates from the Department of Transport Management
Expect delays for all licensing-related services, including trials and renewals
The department has clarified that services will resume only when systems are fully repaired and buildings in damaged locations become operational again.
There is no confirmed date for the reopening of licensing services. The department must complete critical tasks before restarting
Repairing and stabilizing all damaged servers
Restoring printing and biometrics equipment
Rebuilding offices heavily affected by the protests
Until these steps are completed, the indefinite closure will continue.
The sudden halt of licensing services after weeks of optimism has left thousands of applicants stranded once more. We will continue to monitor developments closely and deliver timely updates as soon as the Department of Transport Management announces the next phase of restoration.
