Driving in Kathmandu is always a bit of an adventure. Narrow streets, roadwork, limited parking, and of course, figuring out how to survive Kathmandu traffic. To say that safe driving is important would be an understatement. Driving safely and ensuring road safety is essential, so much so that even a little recklessness on the part of the driver could lead to the death of more than one person. Surely, nothing could be special there, right? Everyone’s making a fuss about why they should never drive slow in Kathmandu, but we have more reasons to show you why you should truly bother.

7 Reasons Why You Should Never Drive Safely in Kathmandu:

Kathmandu  is a small town:

You think that a small and polluted town like Kathmandu has nothing special about it. It takes ages to get from one destination to another. Remember Shree Pashupatinath is just right around the corner, and he is supposed to protect you. However, if you are in hurry, aryaghat is always welcoming. Roads in Kathmandu are clearly more dangerous while you're in speed and more than three-quarters of accidents happen because of human error. So, why drive safely?

Nepal has best mobile internet packages:

In the age of technology, driving while distracted by cell phones has become an increasing problem across Nepal and many other countries in the world. When your attention is on your phone you are not paying attention to the road.  You might have used your phone successfully many times while driving and also might have declared its absolutely safe to safe to text and drive. The is a saying "every young gets to become stupid" but not at the cost of your and others' life.  In other words, texting while driving is also incredibly dangerous.

Alcohol is cheap in Nepal:

In fact, Alcohol in Nepal is considerably cheaper than in other countries. A 50 rupee bill can get you jarred pretty good. Getting behind the wheel of a car, truck, motorcycle, or any other vehicle after consuming alcohol is a serious crime. Any amount of alcohol in your bloodstream can affect your ability to drive. Safe driving requires the ability to concentrate, make good judgments, and react quickly to situations. However, alcohol affects these abilities, putting you and others in danger.

Kathmandu has comfortable traffic signals:

The most common type of crossing is a four-way intersection. In Kathmandu, drivers don’t care and drive what they feel comfortable with. Whether you are driving in a large or small city, you are sure to cross a busy intersection. These intersections are often stressful for drivers due to long backtracks, merging lanes, traffic signals, and rushing drivers generally in much of a hurry than others. Therefore, a driver has to slow down and use common sense when passing through such an intersection.

So what if Kathmandu has teen drivers that are inexperienced:

Experienced drivers have learnt safe driving skills and habits through accumulating experiences on the road. In contrast, teen drivers are new and inexperienced. Since inexperience increases the risk of an accident, parents must be proactive in helping their teenagers become more experienced drivers, accompanying them while they take the wheel both on short and long trips and in all kinds of traffic situations. Encouraging teen drivers to be safe behind the wheel is ensuring that they have the opportunity to grow to lead full, happy, and productive lives.

The prison life in Kathmandu is not really remarkable:

Dangerous driving is more serious than careless driving. Speeding is the most common driving offense on Nepalese roads, especially in Kathmandu. It can include driving aggressively, overtaking in dangerous locations, and racing other vehicles. Additionally, if you drive without a license and are caught driving without a valid bluebook you will be heavily fined. As well as if you are caught drink driving without a license, you will be disqualified from driving for at least a year and could receive an unlimited fine and a jail sentence.

The seatbelts and helmets aren’t as majestic as the street of Kathmandu:

Traffic accidents are now recognized as a veritable neglected pandemic. Today, wearing your seat belt and helmet should be second nature and a natural driving habit whenever you get into your car or motorbike. Even still, there are still some people who do not see the benefits of wearing their seat belts and helmets. Seat belts and helmets save lives, and this is a fact that has been proven through countless studies and research. There are laws and, if you are caught not wearing one, you could be issued a traffic ticket and be required to pay a fine.
