Hyundai has introduced the BS6-compliant Elantra diesel for the SX MT variant and the SX (O) AT variant. The BS6 diesel versions have finally joined the Elantra’s line-up; the BS6 petrols have been on sale since the sedan was updated in October 2019.

The pre-facelift BS4 Elantra diesel was powered by a 1.6-litre engine that made 128hp and 260Nm of torque. In the BS6 era, the Elantra gains a new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that is shared with the Kia Seltos and new Hyundai Creta. The unit puts out 115hp and 250Nm of torque and comes with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox options. While it is down on power and torque compared to the old 1.6, the new 1.5 is likely to make up for it in terms of fuel efficiency.

The Elantra SX variant is well-equipped, with features like automatic headlamps, an electric sunroof, dual-zone climate control, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Blue Link connected car tech, cruise control and push button start/stop with keyless entry. The top-spec Elantra SX (O) adds a 10-way powered driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, LED headlamps, a wireless phone charger, leatherette upholstery and front parking sensors. Safety features on both variants include six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, ISOFIX child seat mounts, a rear parking camera and rear parking sensors.

Apart from launching the BS6 diesel, Hyundai has also rejigged the petrol variants of the Elantra. The manufacturer has decided to axe the base S variant and reduce prices for the remaining SX MT, SX AT and SX(O) AT Elantra petrol variants. However, the now entry-level SX trim is much better equipped than the outgoing S trim.
