Maruti Alto 800, it is this understanding that makes Nepal's most cheapest car.

It is difficult to imagine a car with more features and a better performance at a reasonable Rs 15.49 lakhs than Maruti Alto 800. Not only has the engine been refined to keep pace with the present. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 STD is the base variant in the Alto 800 line-up, the A segment hatchback comes deprived of many styling and comfort features. The low cost maintenance and frugal nature of the low displacement 796cc petrol engine makes Alto 800 one of highest selling cars in the country. Added a couple of years ago to the Alto range, Alto 800 boasts of a contemporary design that falls in line with other contenders in the A segment. It for sure is a viable option for first time buyers or those who wish upgrading from two-wheeler to a four wheeler.

Measuring under four meters (3395 mm to be precise), Alto 800 boasts of 1490 mm width (without side moulding) and is 1475 mm high. The petite hatchback has a suave semblance though in retrospect the Wavefront design renders it a modish appeal.  However when juxtaposed to its closest rivals in A segment like Hyundai Eon and Datsun GO, Alto 800 lags behind in terms of styling.  Front facet features grille and bumper placed beneath it, the bumper comes with large air intakes for keeping the engine cool. Instead of wheel covers, STD variant gets centre cap, also body coloured outside door handles, rear spoiler, body side moulding, internally adjustable outside rear view mirrors are missing in the trim.

Boasting a wheelbase of 2360 mm, Alto 800 has a relatively shorter cabin. A lot is missing in the STD trim when it comes to equipment and interior styling. Grey interior colour scheme matches with the double vinyl seat upholstery. Sunvisor for the driver side, C pillar molded trim, cabin light in three positions, floor carpet and floor console are some of the other styling cues available on the entry level trim. Features devoid of in the STD trim include B & C pillar upper trims, silver accent in speedometer and inside door handles, door trim fabric insert, metallic finish 3 spoke steering wheel, silver accent on instrument panel, audio system, accessory socket, rear parcel tray and new center garnish for integrated audio. Among the comfort features STD gets assist grips for co-driver and rear passengers, 1-litre bottle holder, can holder, dial type climate control, coin holder, driver side storage space, passenger side utility pocket and dual tripmeter. Other significant comfort equipment such as air conditioner with heater, front door trim map pocket, remote fuel lid opener, front power windows, digital lock in speedometer display andremote back door opener are bereft in STD variant.  

Power comes from a low displacement 796 cc, three cylinder petrol engine capable of developing top power of 48 PS at 6000 RPM and peak torque of 69 Nm at 3500 RPM. The engine is mated to a conventional five-speed manual gearbox. Despite running on a low displacement 796 cc petrol engine, Alto 800 promises an excellent run. The frugal three cylinder engine claims to deliver impressive fuel economy of 22.74 kms in a litre. 

Solid disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear have been inset in the hatchback to ensure proficient braking when required. Safety features incorporated in STD trim are very basic like head lights levelling, high mounted stop lamp, immobiliser, front wiper and washer with intermittent, collapsible steering column and tubeless tyres. Alto 800 STD propels to 100 kmph from standstill in 16.81 seconds and attains top speed of 141 kmph. Handling is good enough, though a slight roll can be felt at high speed but well enough for Nepal's road.
